Scottish goalkeeper Angus Gunn faced a challenging introduction to Major League Soccer, as the San Jose Earthquakes suffered a 4-0 home defeat to Orlando City. This match marked the club’s return to play following the World Cup hiatus. For the 30-year-old Gunn, this was his first competitive appearance since Scotland’s tournament exit and his first club start since February.
Despite the lopsided scoreline, Gunn was not directly responsible for the goals allowed and managed to make a few important saves to prevent a larger deficit for the team managed by Bruce Arena. Orlando City’s scoring began early when David Brekalo headed in an Eduard Atuesta free-kick in the seventh minute. Ivan Angulo added a second goal before halftime with a strike from outside the box.
The visitors extended their lead shortly after the break through Antoine Griezmann, who was also making his debut following a move from Atletico Madrid. Braian Ojeda capped off the victory with a header in the 73rd minute. At the opposite end, San Jose’s Timo Werner, recently signed from RB Leipzig, was repeatedly thwarted by Orlando goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau.
Even with this result, the Earthquakes remain level on points at the summit of the Western Conference, sitting behind the Vancouver Whitecaps on goal difference. San Jose currently holds the fourth position in the overall league standings. They are set to host the LA Galaxy this coming Sunday.
