Steve Cooper Emerges as Potential Wales Target Amid Burnley’s Interest in Craig Bellamy

Wales is preparing a shortlist of potential successors to Craig Bellamy, including Steve Cooper, as Burnley continues to pursue the current national team head coach.

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) is currently monitoring potential replacements for Craig Bellamy, as the head coach faces continued interest from Burnley. Reports suggest that former Nottingham Forest and Swansea City manager Steve Cooper has surfaced as an early front-runner to take the position should Bellamy depart.

Burnley, currently seeking a successor for Scott Parker, has intensified its efforts to recruit Bellamy. Although no formal deal has been finalized with the FAW, the governing body is expected to seek at least £1 million in compensation. While the FAW remains hopeful that Bellamy will fulfill his contract and lead the nation through Euro 2028, they have proactively identified alternatives. Cooper is viewed as a primary candidate, particularly as he is currently unattached, meaning no compensation fee would be required.

Other names under consideration include Rob Edwards, who was previously a candidate during the selection process for the 2024 appointment, and former assistant coach Eric Ramsay. Despite recent challenges, including a missed World Cup qualification, Bellamy has achieved success by securing promotion to the top flight of the Nations League. While he has previously voiced a commitment to the Welsh team, he has also acknowledged an interest in returning to club management for financial reasons.
