Federal Government Designates June 12 as Democracy Day Public Holiday

The Federal Government has officially scheduled a public holiday for June 12, 2026, to celebrate Democracy Day and honor the nation’s democratic heritage.

The Nigerian Federal Government has officially declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday to observe Democracy Day.

Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo shared the announcement through a statement released by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.

This annual event serves to recognize the bravery and sacrifices of those who pushed for democratic rule in Nigeria. Tunji-Ojo emphasized that the date marks a vital chapter in the nation’s history, honoring the legacy of citizens whose efforts established current democratic standards.

He reiterated the government’s dedication to transparency, accountability, and the rule of law.

The administration also pledged to continue reinforcing security measures alongside relevant agencies to protect residents and their property, noting that peace is essential for democratic stability. Tunji-Ojo urged all Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s democratic path and remain committed to unity and civic duty.

The holiday serves as a tribute to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola and commemorates the 1993 presidential election, which is frequently cited as the most transparent and equitable vote in the history of the country.
