Southampton Seeks Extension Amidst Allegations of Scouting Rival Training
Southampton has formally requested additional time to conduct an internal investigation following accusations that they spied on Middlesbrough during the Championship play-offs.
The English Football League (EFL) has charged Southampton with failing to uphold good faith and violating regulations that prohibit clubs from observing opponent training sessions within 72 hours of a scheduled fixture.
Middlesbrough alleges that a Southampton staff member was discovered monitoring and recording a practice session at Rockliffe Park just two days before their goalless draw in the play-off semi-final first leg.
Southampton has not contested the claims. Manager Tonda Eckert declined to comment on the matter during a recent press conference. While standard procedure allows 14 days for a response, the EFL has urged the disciplinary commission to expedite the process.
CEO Phil Parsons confirmed the club is working with authorities, stating that the request for more time is necessary to ensure a thorough and responsible review given the tight schedule between matches.
This legal uncertainty clouds the upcoming second leg at St Mary’s, as the independent commission has the authority to issue penalties ranging from fines to point deductions or potential removal from the tournament.
The current regulations, introduced following a 2019 incident involving Leeds United, explicitly forbid monitoring opposing teams during training.
If Southampton is found to have committed these violations, they could face significant sanctions, including the possibility of a points deduction that might even impact their standing if they were to reach the Premier League. The urgency stems from the need to reach a resolution before the play-off final on May 23.
