Presidency Claims Successful Benue Rescue Signals Turning Point in Security Battle
The Nigerian Presidency has pointed to the recent rescue of 13 kidnapping victims in Benue State and various military actions across the country as evidence that the armed forces are gaining ground in their counter-terrorism efforts.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, stated that these significant operational successes are often ignored by the public in favor of focusing on isolated security incidents.
Onanuga criticized the tendency of some analysts and citizens to focus only on negative reports, such as bombings or kidnappings, while overlooking the consistent progress made by military personnel.
He highlighted the rescue of 13 passengers from a Benue Links bus in the Ohimini Local Government Area as a clear example of military efficiency. Security sources clarified that the perpetrators were local criminals, debunking initial media reports that incorrectly blamed Fulani bandits.
Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has requested that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board allow the traumatized students among the victims to reschedule their examinations.
Beyond this incident, the Presidency highlighted successful military operations across several other states, including Plateau, Borno, Yobe, Sokoto, Kogi, Imo, and Edo, where troops have neutralized insurgents, defused explosives, and apprehended suspects.
While acknowledging that security challenges persist, Onanuga argued that the current trajectory of military operations merits public support rather than criticism.
He further noted that defense officials are strengthening international cooperation, including participation in high-level security panels abroad to improve intelligence sharing.
