Public Outcry Follows Viral Video of Masquerade Attacking Woman in Delta State
A disturbing video capturing a woman being assaulted by a masquerade in Delta State has ignited widespread condemnation on social media.
The footage, which shows a figure in a red-and-yellow costume repeatedly striking a woman with a cane-like object, has prompted many Nigerians to demand immediate investigations and stricter oversight of cultural festival traditions.
Although the incident is reported to have occurred during the Urheovware Urhobo Cultural Festival in Edjeba, Warri South, authorities have yet to issue an official statement verifying the details.
In the recording, the woman is seen on the ground near an open gutter, struggling to shield herself from the lashes of the masquerade while onlookers observe. Despite her clear distress, the physical abuse continues until the attacker eventually walks away, leaving the woman visibly hurt.
Netizens have expressed profound anger, with many questioning the ethical foundations of such cultural practices.
Comments across social media platforms range from calls for government intervention to harsh criticism of traditions that facilitate violence. Prominent commentators like Daniel Regha have publicly labeled the behavior as unacceptable, asserting that cultural affiliation should not serve as an excuse for abuse.
This incident follows recent reports of misconduct during the Alue-Do festival in Ozoro, where groups of men assaulted women in public view. Following those events, the Delta State Government and various advocacy groups condemned the actions as barbaric, leading to the arrest of over a dozen suspects.
As investigations into these patterns of violence continue, the public outcry serves as a clear signal that citizens are no longer willing to tolerate such treatment under the guise of tradition.
