Super Eagles Secure Quarter-Final Spot With Historic Victory Over Mozambique
Nigeria’s Super Eagles have advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations following a dominant 4-0 win against Mozambique at Fez Stadium on Monday.
The scoring opened in the 20th minute when Ademola Lookman converted a pass from Akor Adams, followed by a second goal from Victor Osimhen just before halftime to extend the lead.
Early in the second period, Osimhen secured his brace after being assisted once more by Lookman, while Akor Adams added the final blow with a high-powered strike from within the penalty box.
This win marks a historic milestone for Nigeria, as they have achieved four consecutive victories to start an AFCON campaign for the first time.
The team is now scheduled to compete in the quarter-finals this Saturday against either DR Congo or Algeria.
A meeting with the “Desert Warriors” would represent Nigeria’s toughest tactical test yet. Algeria entered the knockout stage with a perfect record and a defense that conceded only once in the group phase. A showdown would feature a mouth-watering battle between Nigeria’s Osimhen and Algeria’s in-form Riyad Mahrez.
If the “Leopards” advance, it will be a narrative-driven rematch. Nigeria was recently eliminated by DR Congo on penalties during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, making this a prime opportunity for the Super Eagles to seek sporting redemption.
