Adekimi Ojo, the Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, has announced the apprehension of 42 illegal miners following the kidnapping of Oba Salman Olátúnjí Aweda of Olayinka, located in the Ifelodun Local Government Area.

Authorities report that 10 armed individuals raided the monarch’s palace on Saturday evening. After securing royalty payments made to the Oba by miners earlier that day, the assailants abducted the ruler along with his brother.

The police force utilized drones and strategic resources to conduct a sweep of the community, resulting in the detention of 42 illegal miners. While these individuals are currently being held at the police headquarters in Ilorin, Commissioner Ojo stated that it remains unconfirmed if the suspects were directly involved in the abduction. An active investigation is ongoing.

During the incident, the monarch’s brother was taken alongside the Oba. However, he eventually refused to continue walking due to physical exhaustion. The kidnappers secured him to a tree before proceeding with the Oba. Reports indicate the abductors have since contacted the community, requesting a N400 million ransom for the ruler’s release.

Abdulrasheed Femi Yusuf, Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government, condemned the event and expressed growing alarm regarding regional security. He confirmed that local authorities are collaborating with security agencies to ensure the safe return of the monarch.
