The Federal Capital Territory Administration has unfolded plans for free HIV counselling and testing as part of its 2025 World AIDS Day programme, anchoring this year’s events on community participation and shared responsibility.

In a statement released on Thursday by Mrs. Bola Ajao, aide to the Mandate Secretary of the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, the Secretariat said the 2025 commemoration themed “Overcoming Disruption: Sustaining Nigeria’s HIV Response” will be inclusive and people-centered.

A key feature of the programme is a high-level one-day symposium scheduled for December 2 in Abuja.
World AIDS Day, observed annually on December 1, serves as a global reminder of the fight against HIV/AIDS, a moment to reflect on progress, strengthen solidarity, and reinforce commitments to prevention and treatment.

Director of Public Health, Dr. Dan Gadzama, noted that the Mandate Secretary has directed the health authorities to align fully with global efforts aimed at boosting awareness and halting the spread of HIV in the FCT.

He explained that the symposium will gather policymakers, health professionals, development partners, people living with HIV, and community representatives to review achievements, share practical insights, and outline stronger strategies for HIV response in the territory.

Dr. Fatima Daggash, State Programme Coordinator for HIV/AIDS, STIs, and Viral Hepatitis, added that the day also honours those lost to AIDS-related illnesses and reinforces the ongoing commitment to ending the epidemic.

She said the gathering will provide a space for frank discussions on existing gaps and sustainable, long-term solutions.

Beyond the symposium, the FCTA will offer free HIV counselling and testing and conduct wide-ranging community sensitisation to encourage early detection, ensure linkage to care, sustain viral suppression, and tackle stigma.

Residents are urged to participate actively and take advantage of the services, as early testing and open dialogue remain central to ending HIV/AIDS in the nation’s capital.
