Michael Owen Questions England’s 2026 World Cup Prospects Under Tuchel Amid Aging Squad Concerns

Former England international and Liverpool legend Michael Owen has cast doubt on England’s ability to win the 2026 World Cup under new manager Thomas Tuchel, citing aging key players, declining form, and potentially challenging weather conditions.

Speaking to 247Bet, Owen admitted he is “not confident about us winning the World Cup at this stage,” despite acknowledging England’s consistency in reaching the latter stages of major tournaments. He noted that “other international sides may be better suited to the conditions this time,” given that the tournament will be played across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, regions known for their hot and varied climates.

The ex-striker’s biggest concerns center on the team’s aging core. “Star players such as Kane are getting older he’s not going to be getting any better. While world-class players such as Kyle Walker will no longer be there,” he said.

Owen also pointed to a dip in form among younger stars, saying, “Even players like Foden are not at the top of their game compared to what they were a year or two ago.”

Defensively, he questioned the squad’s depth and options: “We used to have a lot of good defenders. Now I’m thinking, who’s going to play left-back? Who’s going to play centre-half? John Stones isn’t getting any younger.”

Summing up his thoughts, Owen said, “I think we were probably better a year or two ago. But a lot changes in football.”

He concluded that for England to stand a real chance in 2026, “a major upturn in performance” would be required. Thomas Tuchel, who officially took charge in January 2025, faces mounting pressure as his primary goal remains unchanged to deliver England their first World Cup since 1966.
