Sisi Backs Trump’s Gaza Ceasefire Plan, Warns Against Palestinian Displacement
Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Monday praised US President Donald Trump’s proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza as negotiators from Hamas, Israel and the United States met in Cairo to discuss a possible truce and a hostage-prisoner swap.
Speaking at a ceremony commemorating the 1973 war with Israel, Sisi described Trump’s initiative as a welcome step toward ending two years of intense fighting and humanitarian suffering in Gaza. He said a ceasefire, the return of detainees, reconstruction of Gaza and a political process that leads to Palestinian statehood would put the region on “the right path to lasting peace and stability.”
Recalling the 1979 Camp David Accords that normalised relations between Egypt and Israel, Sisi argued that durable peace must be based on justice rather than coercion. He reiterated Egypt’s role as a key mediator in the conflict and warned against any mass displacement of Palestinians into Egyptian territory.
“The Egyptian army is committed to its mission to protect the country and preserve its borders,” Sisi said, underscoring Cairo’s security concerns even as it hosts talks. He also noted that Egypt’s longstanding security cooperation with the United States backed historically by significant US military aid remains a foundation for regional stability.
