Student Shoots Two Classmates, Kills Himself at Colorado High School
A student opened fire at Evergreen High School in suburban Denver on Wednesday, September 10, shooting two classmates before turning the gun on himself and later dying, authorities said.
The shooting was reported around 12:30 p.m. at the school in Evergreen, Colorado, about 30 miles west of Denver. Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Jacki Kelley said shots were fired both inside and outside the building.
Responding officers located the shooter within five minutes, Kelley said, adding that no officers fired their weapons during the incident.
More than 100 officers from surrounding agencies rushed to the scene.
The two victims were initially listed in critical condition, St. Anthony Hospital CEO Kevin Cullinan said. By Wednesday evening, one teen was in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries, according to trauma director Dr. Brian Blackwood. The students’ ages have not been released.
Parents gathered at a nearby elementary school to reunite with their children.
Eighteen students who fled the campus took shelter in a nearby home after knocking on the door for help, homeowner Don Cygan told Denver’s KUSA-TV. Cygan, a retired educator, said he wrote down the names of the students and their parents as they arrived, while his wife, a retired nurse, treated the teens for shock.
