Shettima Mourns Victims Of Borno Attack, Vows Justice Against Boko Haram Killers
Vice President Kashim Shettima has condoled with families of those killed in Friday night’s Boko Haram attack on Darajamal community, Bama Local Government Area of Borno State, pledging that the Federal Government will ensure justice is served.
At least 63 people, including five soldiers, were killed when insurgents stormed the resettled community on motorcycles around 10 p.m., shooting indiscriminately and razing homes, shops, and vehicles. Survivors said the attackers operated for hours before reinforcements arrived.
In a statement issued Monday by his spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha, the Vice President said the tragedy has left the entire nation in grief.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, the people of Borno State, and the Nigerian military over the tragic loss of our compatriots,” Shettima said. “These deaths have left the entire nation in collective grief, but we are confident that justice will be served for the bereaved families.”
Shettima assured the people of Borno that President Bola Tinubu had directed security agencies to immediately review counter-insurgency operations nationwide, including the deployment of new drones and other advanced surveillance equipment.
He also pointed to the federal government’s ongoing consideration of state policing, stressing that some security challenges require locally based units with deeper knowledge of terrain, culture, and grassroots networks.
“The armed forces have the capacity to overcome these threats, and the Federal Government remains steadfast in supporting them,” the Vice President said, while offering prayers for the victims.
The Darajamal attack marks one of the deadliest in recent months, striking a community that had only just been resettled after years of displacement.
