Imo Police Command Replaces Tactical Units with New Violent Crime Response Squad
The Imo State Police Command has officially retired several well-known tactical squads, including the Tiger Base, Scorpion Unit, and Lion Squad.
In their place, authorities have introduced the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) to bolster efforts against serious criminal activity throughout the state.
State Police Commissioner Audu Garba Bosso introduced the VCRU at the Owerri headquarters, noting that the move follows instructions from Inspector-General of Police Olatunj Rilwalu Disu to enhance nationwide operational effectiveness.
The transition is part of broader reforms within the Nigeria Police Force to emphasize accountability and professionalism.
Rigorous Training and Oversight
Commissioner Bosso confirmed that members of the VCRU were handpicked for their experience and integrity.
Each officer has completed specialized training covering tactical operations, intelligence, and human rights compliance. To maintain transparency, the Command has also established a Civilian Oversight Board to handle public feedback and monitor unit activities.
Government and Stakeholder Support
Governor Hope Uzodinma, represented by Chief Principal Security Officer Gboyako Shaba Adamu, expressed the state government’s commitment to supporting the new initiative. The inauguration was attended by community leaders, traditional rulers, and representatives from the Nigerian Bar Association, all of whom urged the new unit to prioritize human rights and professional conduct.
Operational Mandate
According to Command spokesperson Henry Okoye, the VCRU is tasked with curbing armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism, and illegal weapon possession.
By utilizing intelligence-led strategies and fostering better relationships with local communities, the unit aims to provide rapid and effective responses to criminal threats while ensuring the protection of citizens.
