The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, has reaffirmed that it remains part of the Federal Government’s subsidised kidney dialysis programme, stating that no fewer than 897 patients have already benefited since its rollout in January 2025.

The Head of Public Relations and Protocol Unit, Usman Koli, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, noting that the omission of ATBUTH from a recent list of participating federal hospitals was a mere oversight.

“ATBUTH Bauchi has been providing subsidised kidney dialysis services at the approved rate of ₦12,000 since 8 January 2025. To date, 897 patients have benefited from this intervention. We have consistently ensured that all consumables are covered within the said amount, thereby easing the financial burden on patients and their families,” Koli said.

He stressed that the initiative has served not only residents of Bauchi State but also patients from across the North-East and neighbouring states.

Beyond dialysis, Koli highlighted that ATBUTH has been a frontline partner in the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda for healthcare. Since November 2024, the hospital has implemented a free Caesarean section programme, covering surgery, post-operative care, and treatment for both mothers and babies with over 1,000 beneficiaries recorded so far.

In addition, the hospital is among the pioneer institutions deploying the National Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance System (NEMSAS). Since its official launch in Bauchi by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, the facility has delivered free emergency care for up to 48 hours to more than 500 patients, particularly accident victims and other critical cases.

Koli commended the Federal Government and the Ministry of Health for sustaining policies that reduce the cost of care for Nigerians.

“As a tertiary hospital strategically positioned in the North-East, we remain fully aligned with the Ministry’s vision of expanding access to affordable, quality, and compassionate healthcare. For clarity, ATBUTH Bauchi is not only part of the subsidised kidney dialysis programme but also at the forefront of other national health initiatives directly improving lives,” he said.

It will be recalled that the Federal Government recently slashed the cost of dialysis in federal hospitals by 76 per cent from an average of ₦50,000 to ₦12,000 per session under the directive of President Bola Tinubu. The new rate is currently implemented across facilities such as the Federal Medical Centres in Ebute-Metta, Jabi, Owerri, Abeokuta, and Azare; University College Hospital, Ibadan; Lagos University Teaching Hospital; University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital; University of Benin Teaching Hospital; and University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.
