EFCC Uncovers Data Sales Scam as NIMC Warns Nigerians to Guard NINs

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has issued a stern warning to Nigerians over a disturbing surge in fraud cases involving the illegal trade of personal data, particularly the National Identification Number (NIN). The Commission made it clear that it will not be liable for any fallout suffered by individuals who willingly share their NINs with unauthorized parties.

This development comes on the heels of a report by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which revealed that over 2,000 Nigerians have fallen prey to scammers. These fraudsters typically offer between ₦1,500 and ₦2,000 in exchange for access to personal data, which they later resell to fintech companies for as much as ₦5,000.

According to NIMC’s spokesperson, Dr. Kayode Adegoke, the scheme poses a “serious security concern” and carries “grave consequences” for affected NIN holders. He emphasized that any citizen who shares their data for financial gain does so at their own risk.

Adegoke further warned that leaking NIN details can expose individuals to identity theft, fraud, and other criminal threats. He reminded the public that the commission has repeatedly cautioned against disclosing such sensitive information to unverified individuals or organizations.

The Commission also urged service providers to strictly verify all NINs before offering services, noting that such checks are vital for user protection.

To ensure digital identity safety, NIMC encouraged Nigerians to download the NINAuth app available on iOS and Android to manage and protect their identity more effectively. Adegoke concluded by stressing that safeguarding personal data is a collective duty, likening NIN confidentiality to that of an ATM PIN or password.
