Wolves Induct Late Diogo Jota Into Hall of Fame Following Tragic Death
Wolverhampton Wanderers have posthumously inducted former striker Diogo Jota into their Hall of Fame, following his tragic death in a car accident in Spain.
The Portugal international and his 25-year-old brother, fellow footballer André Silva, lost their lives in a crash on July 3 in the Spanish province of Zamora.
In response, the club made what it described as a “rare and heartfelt decision” to honour Jota’s legacy by swiftly adding him to their Hall of Fame, which is independently overseen by a committee.
“There is such a feeling of sadness and disbelief around this awful tragedy that we wanted to make this tribute of our own as soon as we could,” said John Richards, Wolves Hall of Fame chairman and club vice-president.
Richards reflected on Jota’s significant contributions during the club’s rise under manager Nuno Espírito Santo, including their 2017–18 Championship-winning season and early Premier League campaigns.
“So many fans across the game—especially in Portugal after he helped them win the Nations League this summer—are feeling his loss deeply. We saw no reason to delay this decision,” he said.
Jota initially joined Wolves on loan from Atlético Madrid in July 2017, before making the move permanent.
He scored 44 goals in 131 appearances and was instrumental in helping Wolves earn promotion and secure a seventh-place finish in their first season back in the Premier League, which earned them Europa League qualification. He later moved to Liverpool in 2020.
Wolves will also honour Jota and his brother at their final pre-season friendly against Celta Vigo on Saturday, August 9. More extensive commemorations are planned for the Premier League opener against Manchester City on Saturday, August 16.
