Twins Top Cubs 4–2, But Lose Buxton To Hand Injury
The Minnesota Twins edged the Chicago Cubs 4–2 Wednesday night, sealing a second straight win with early offense and shutdown relief work—but it came at a cost.
Byron Buxton, Minnesota’s All-Star center fielder, left the game in the second inning after being hit by a pitch on the hand. Initially staying in, he was pulled with what the team later called a left hand contusion. His status for the All-Star weekend in Georgia—including a possible Home Run Derby appearance—is now uncertain.
Before exiting, Buxton stole his 17th base of the season, remaining a perfect 17-for-17.
Matt Wallner blasted a solo homer, while Ryan Jeffers and Carlos Correa chipped in RBIs in a productive first inning. David Festa (3-3) tossed 5 1/3 innings and gave up two runs. The bullpen was lights out from there, with Jhoan Duran notching his 14th save.
Chicago starter Cade Horton (3-3) lasted just 4 2/3 innings, giving up four runs on six hits, his third shaky outing in his last four.
Minnesota wraps the series Thursday with Chris Paddack (3-7) on the mound against Colin Rea (6-3) for the Cubs.
