Messi Makes History With Fourth Straight MLS Brace In Inter Miami Win
Lionel Messi extended his record-breaking form in Major League Soccer by scoring twice in Inter Miami’s 2-1 win over the New England Revolution on Wednesday.
At 38, the Argentine legend became the first MLS player to score multiple goals in four consecutive matches, bringing his tally to 14 goals in 15 games this season — despite playing six fewer games than top scorer Sam Surridge.
Messi opened the scoring in the 27th minute and doubled it 11 minutes later, courtesy of a slick assist from longtime teammate Sergio Busquets.
“It’s unbelievable how he continues doing things we thought we’d never see again,” said coach Javier Mascherano.
Goalkeeper Oscar Ustari helped hold off New England with six saves, though Carles Gil managed a late consolation goal in the 79th minute.
The win moves Miami up to 5th in the Eastern Conference, seven points behind leaders FC Cincinnati — but with three games in hand.
Mascherano admitted he couldn’t sub Messi out due to the tight scoreline but acknowledged:
“We know at some point we have to rest him.”
