Google’s Mandatory Android 16 Update for Pixel 6a to Throttle Battery Overheating Risk, Free Replacements Offered
Google is set to begin rolling out a mandatory Android 16 update for Pixel 6a users starting July 8, 2025, but this isn’t your usual feature-packed upgrade. Instead, for a subset of owners, the update will come with a built-in penalty: reduced battery capacity and slower charging speeds all in the name of safety.
The reason? Overheating.
According to Google, a number of Pixel 6a handsets have been flagged as “Impacted Devices” phones that pose an elevated risk of battery overheating once they surpass 400 charge cycles. To mitigate this, Google is activating battery management features via Android 16 that will automatically throttle performance after that 400-cycle mark. All Pixel 6a phones will get the Android 16 update, but only impacted units will be affected by the battery limitation.
This quiet downgrade isn’t without precedent. Pixel 4a users experienced a similar update earlier this year one that many called controversial for prioritizing safety at the cost of user experience.
To soften the blow, Google is offering free battery replacements for those affected, starting July 21, 2025.
Here’s how the replacement program works:
Eligible Regions: United States, Canada, UK, Germany, Singapore, Japan, and India.
Options Available:
Walk-in repair centers: Available in all listed countries.
Mail-in repair: Only available in the U.S. and India.
Alternatives: Users can opt for a cash offer or a Google Store discount towards another Pixel device.
Google’s support documents confirm that users won’t see any immediate changes after the update, the throttle only kicks in once the battery hits that 400-charge-cycle threshold. Still, many users have raised concerns, with some seeing this as yet another case of “planned obsolescence,” despite Google’s reassurance that safety is the top priority.
Whether this turns into a PR disaster or a model of corporate responsibility depends largely on how transparent and accessible Google makes the replacement process.
