After 31 Years, FG Hands Over Houses to 1994 Super Eagles Legends
The Federal Government has finally delivered on its 31-year-old promise of providing housing to members of the 1994 Super Eagles team that won the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Tunisia.
The announcement was made in a statement published Wednesday on the official website of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.
Among the recipients was former Super Eagles striker Efan Ekoku, who was represented at the brief ceremony by his niece, Lisa Jenifer Nwagbogun, as he received an allocation letter for a house in Abuja.
The letter was presented by Pemi Temitope, Director and Head of the Department of Public Building and Housing Development, on behalf of the Minister. Temitope noted that the move reflects the government’s commitment to honouring those who brought pride to the country.
“This move is a testament to the government’s dedication to recognizing and rewarding the patriotic service of the 1994 Super Eagles,” Temitope said.
Speaking on behalf of her uncle, Nwagbogun thanked the government and the ministry for fulfilling the long-awaited promise.
“I am deeply grateful to the Federal Government and the Ministry of Housing for fulfilling this pledge to my uncle. It is truly heartening to witness such commitment to integrity and follow-through,” she said.
“This gesture not only honours Mr. Efan Ekoku’s service but also restores faith in the value of public promises being kept.”
It is worth noting that former President Muhammadu Buhari approved the execution of the housing pledge in 2022, nearly 30 years after it was first made.
Members of the iconic squad are now being allocated houses in different states, with some, including Ekoku, receiving theirs in Abuja.
