The Network Against Corruption and Trafficking (NACAT) has issued a warning about the dangers of narcotics.

Speaking to students at Dorben College of Digital Technology, Dutsen-Alhaji, Abuja, in the presence of educators and civil society members, NACAT’s Operational Manager, Mr. Stanley Ugagbe, delivered a keynote presentation titled “Understanding Substance Abuse.” He emphasized the urgent need to raise awareness about the harmful effects of drug abuse.

Ugagbe stressed that students should be educated and empowered to act as ambassadors of integrity and vigilance within their schools and communities.

He highlighted the devastating impact of drug abuse, the societal damage caused by corruption, and the human toll of trafficking.

Stanley also explained the psychological, social, and legal consequences of substance abuse, noting that experimentation often starts due to peer pressure, emotional distress, or a desire to escape difficult situations.

“Addiction doesn’t start with a needle or a pill, it starts with a choice. And every choice has a consequence,” he warned.

He emphasized that being found in possession of even a small amount of banned substances can result in criminal charges, potentially destroying a young person’s future.

“The law is not as forgiving as your parents or your teachers. One mistake can leave a permanent mark on your record,” he said.

He encouraged the students to draw strength from their community, education, and personal values.

“You don’t have to walk alone. Talk to someone, ask for help, and never be ashamed to say no,” he added.

“The future is in your hands. Protect it. Guard it. And choose to rise above the traps set by drugs and bad influences.”
