Kano University Shuts Female Hostel Over Alleged Immorality
The management of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN), Kano, has ordered the closure of two privately owned female hostels due to reports of alleged immoral activities and other concerns.
The affected hostels—Al-Ansar Indabo at UDB Road and another in Hotoro—were previously approved by the university as off-campus accommodations, both situated within walking distance of the campus.
In a statement, the Vice President of Campus Life, Dr. Hamza Garba, explained that the closures were prompted by complaints involving immoral behavior, insufficient water and electricity supply, instances of student violence, and unauthorized late-night movements. He added that the university remains committed to maintaining a safe and disciplined environment for all students.
“I am directed by the management to write, inform, and bring to the attention of our esteemed parents and students that the university has withdrawn its approval for Al-Ansar Indabo female students hostels located at UDB Road and Hotoro” he said
Students residing in the affected hostels have been instructed to vacate the premises immediately after the conclusion of the fall semester examinations.
The university also issued a stern warning that it will not be held responsible for any consequences arising from failure to comply with the directive. To ensure enforcement, MAAUN is collaborating with relevant security agencies to oversee the eviction and maintain order during the process.
“Whatever misconduct happened must have occurred outside”one student said.
Another student suggested that the closure might be more closely linked to the hostels’ poor living conditions than to the alleged moral concerns.
The affected hostels reportedly house around 500 female students, many of whom come from outside Kano State. Some students confirmed that relocation plans are already in motion, with arrangements being made to move them into newly constructed hostels situated closer to the university. One of these new hostels is said to be named in honor of a late student.
MAAUN currently lacks on-campus accommodation facilities and instead relies on collaborations with private developers to provide housing for its student population.
