Two co-wives from the Dakwa community in Bwari Area Council, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), have reportedly been hospitalized after consuming a herbal mixture intended to arouse their husband, who recently married a third wife.

The herbal mixture, known as kayan mata in Hausa, is typically used to enhance sexual desire in male partners.

The women, whose names have been withheld, ingested the herbs three days after their husband married a third wife from Gusau, the capital of Zamfara State.

Musa Muhammad, the husband involved in the incident, confirmed the event and stated that his two wives were rushed to a clinic in Madalla, Niger State, where they were diagnosed with organ damage allegedly caused by the herbal concoction. The women underwent surgery and were discharged on Monday.

Muhammad explained that the herbalist, who usually supplied them with the liquid form of the herb mixed with milk, gave them a different powdered version this time.

“My attention was called from my main house that my two wives were not feeling fine because I passed the night at a different house where my new bride is residing,” he narrated.

“So, I rushed there and found them rolling on the ground, complaining of stomach pain. Initially, I invited a nurse from within the community who placed them on drip, but without any improvement. So, I took them to a clinic in Madalla town where they underwent a test and surgery.

“They were discharged after about a week there,’’

Muhammad also mentioned that efforts were underway to locate the female herbalist in order to investigate her and prevent others from becoming victims of her products.

Dr. Taiye Anifowose, a medical doctor and gynecologist, has warned women against consuming such herbs, emphasizing that they could be harmful to their organs. She added that prolonged use of these herbs might also impact a woman’s reproductive system.

Dr. Anifowose called for increased awareness and education on the risks of these substances, urging government agencies, family members, and community leaders to play a role in enlightening the public about their dangers.
