A 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck a popular holiday destination in Spain, with tremors felt along the country’s south-east coast.
According to Spain’s National Geographic Institute, the quake occurred at 7:13 a.m. at a depth of two kilometres.
Reports indicate that the tremors were experienced in over 50 towns, including the well-known tourist hub of Alicante.
The earthquake’s epicentre was located just a few kilometres off the mainland and around 70km from the city of Almeria.
As reported by Sur, alerts were sent to residents’ phones in the affected areas to inform them of the situation.
Both tourists and locals were jolted awake by what was described as a “strong” and “surprisingly long” earthquake.
One person wrote on social media: “In Roquetas De Mar it was very noticeable and it lasted a few seconds, the whole hotel room was shaking.”
One person living in Almeria said “the whole house shook” when the quake hit.
Tremors were also felt in the areas of Malaga, Granada, and Jaen, as well as across the Levante region, which includes Murcia, Alicante, and Albacete.
So far, there have been no reports of injuries or property damage.
