2026 World Cup: Harry Kane highlights Mexico’s altitude edge over England

Harry Kane admits England faces a difficult challenge against Mexico in the World Cup round of 16 due to the high altitude at Estadio Azteca.

Harry Kane, the captain of England, believes Mexico holds a significant upper hand heading into their upcoming round of 16 fixture. While Mexico booked their spot in the next stage by beating Ecuador 2-0, England advanced following a narrow 2-1 win over DR Congo.

The two sides are scheduled to meet on Sunday, July 5, at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Situated 2,200 meters above sea level, the stadium’s elevation is a major point of concern for Kane.

As co-hosts, Mexico has played three of their four matches at this venue. Kane noted that the team does not have enough time to properly adjust to the thin air, giving the Mexican squad a clear physiological benefit. He emphasized that the squad was aware of this challenge from the start and must approach the match with the correct mentality despite the hurdle.
