The Christian Association of Nigerian Americans (CANAN) has formally requested that the Nigerian federal government cease the practice of reintegrating terror suspects into the community without subjecting them to a formal trial. The organization emphasizes that every individual accused of terrorism must face the judicial process as mandated by law.
During a virtual press briefing, CANAN President Dr. James Fadel and Executive Director Dr. Banjo Olaniyan stated that the reintegration of these suspects undermines justice for victims and weakens accountability. They underscored the necessity of following the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act of 2022 following the recent arrests of high-ranking Boko Haram and ISWAP commanders.
The association also addressed remarks made by Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God. He highlighted the ongoing danger faced by innocent Nigerians and called for the identification and prosecution of those who fund and profit from terrorist operations. Furthermore, CANAN expressed support for the establishment of State Police, provided that oversight includes civil society representatives to ensure transparency.
Ultimately, the group remains committed to advocating for religious freedom and the safety of all citizens, pledging to continue collaborating with international and local stakeholders to combat extremism in Nigeria.
