Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has formally rejected a new government role proposed by President Volodymyr Zelensky. Fedorov expressed gratitude for the offers but maintained that only three roles—president, defense minister, and commander-in-chief—truly dictate the progression of the ongoing war. President Zelensky previously suggested positions such as deputy prime minister for military innovation, yet Fedorov has declined to accept.
Fedorov’s recent dismissal, which followed a period of tension with former commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, sparked widespread public demonstrations. While Zelensky has since replaced Syrskyi with Mykhailo Drapatyi, protesters continue to demand that Fedorov be restored to his former position. Supporters point to Fedorov’s work in military data analytics and the successful Army of Drones initiative as evidence of his effectiveness.
In a statement, Fedorov noted that his team had been executing a specific strategy centered on protecting airspace, stabilizing the front line, and targeting the Russian economy. He emphasized his commitment to achieving victory through strength rather than pursuing individual status. Although Yevhenii Khmara has taken over his ministerial duties, officials indicate that discussions regarding Fedorov’s future involvement in the government are still ongoing.
