Trailer impact destroys FMC Umuahia barrier and stalls highway traffic

A heavy trailer crashed into the Federal Medical Centre Umuahia’s perimeter fence on Thursday, causing no casualties but creating major traffic delays on the Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Expressway.

During the early morning hours of Thursday, a large trailer carrying iron rods struck the perimeter wall of the Federal Medical Centre in Umuahia. The crash occurred on the Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Expressway after the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle while traveling uphill.

While the collision resulted in significant damage to a section of the wall recently upgraded by the Abia State Government, there were no fatalities reported. The wreckage came to a stop near Finbarrs Road, adjacent to the Abia State High Court, resulting in substantial morning traffic delays.

The unidentified driver explained that the vehicle experienced a mechanical failure around 2 a.m. He stated that the trailer lost compression while ascending the incline, which forced the heavy vehicle backward into the structure. The resulting position of the trailer caused major congestion for local commuters. Authorities and traffic officials remained on-site to manage the flow of vehicles and coordinate the removal of the trailer from the roadway.
