President Bola Tinubu has disclosed details regarding the primary conditions set by militants who seized students and teachers in Oriire, Oyo State, on May 15. During a Thursday meeting at the Presidential Villa with the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, and the Oyo State Council of Obas, the President stated that the perpetrators sought the release of captured associates and financial payment.
The government refused to engage in negotiations, telling the kidnappers there would be no deal. President Tinubu emphasized that his administration remains firm against criminal factions, particularly after the attackers murdered a teacher. He noted that some of the assailants are foreign nationals, pointing to regional instability in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger as factors complicating national security. To combat these threats, the President underscored the need to bolster forest guard capabilities and establish state police forces.
Following the ordeal, security personnel successfully rescued the victims on July 10.
