Suspected Gunmen Kill Three Vigilantes in Plateau State Ambush

Three vigilantes were killed during a nighttime raid by suspected gunmen in Sabon-Layi, Barkin Ladi, raising fresh alarms over the persistent security crisis in Plateau State.

On Saturday evening, three local vigilantes lost their lives following a violent raid by unidentified gunmen in the Sabon-Layi area of Gwol District, located in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State. The assault took place around 10 p.m., sparking renewed anxiety regarding the ongoing instability within the region.

Local residents reported that the attackers moved into the community under the darkness of night, specifically targeting vigilante members who were performing their security duties. Rwang Tengwong, spokesperson for the Berom Youth Moulders, verified the incident and characterized the murder of these guards as a deliberate strike against the community’s defensive efforts. According to Tengwong, these individuals were part of a volunteer group organized to shield inhabitants from frequent violence.

Expressing frustration over the deteriorating conditions, Tengwong noted that people in Barkin Ladi remain deeply fearful, even with existing security deployments. He urged both state and federal authorities to reinforce the district with more security forces to deter future occurrences. Meanwhile, Alfred Alabo, the Plateau State Police Command spokesperson, could not be reached for comment regarding the situation.
