A violent assault by suspected gunmen on the Kum and Wereng-Camp communities in the Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State has resulted in the deaths of at least nine people from a single family. The victims included a two-month-old infant.
Witnesses noted that the raid began around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday and persisted for over an hour. During the chaos, the local village head suffered serious injuries. Resident Precious Tok described the event as a highly coordinated and particularly brutal attack. Perpetrators reportedly entered the village in force, firing wildly and driving local inhabitants to seek refuge in the surrounding wilderness.
Rwang Tengwong, spokesperson for the Berom Youth Moulders Association, verified that the assailants utilized the darkness to strike vulnerable families. While the wounded village head is currently receiving medical care, community members are urging both state and federal authorities to improve security measures across the region. Although security personnel have arrived on the scene, many villagers remain in fear and displaced from their homes. Attempts to receive an official statement from the Plateau State Police Command have not yet been successful.
