Beginning August 17, 2026, the Rivers State Police Command will launch Operation Velvet, a campaign aimed at ensuring strict adherence to state traffic regulations. This initiative follows orders from Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu, who responded to the rising number of traffic violations that have hindered road flow and jeopardized public safety.
Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju has instructed all tactical teams, divisional officers, and area commanders to carry out the mandate. Those found violating traffic laws will face potential vehicle impoundment, arrest, and legal prosecution. Additionally, Commissioner Adepoju cautioned officers assigned to the task against engaging in corruption, intimidation, or any form of professional misconduct, noting that such behavior will result in severe disciplinary consequences.
The command has requested that all commuters, including commercial transport workers and private motorists, follow traffic rules and cooperate with law enforcement personnel to facilitate safer road conditions.
