South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster named Darline Graham Nordone to fill the seat left by her brother, the late Senator Lindsey Graham, on Monday. The decision followed a public suggestion from President Donald Trump that she be chosen for the role.
Nordone is set to occupy the position until the current term concludes in January, following the senator’s sudden passing at age 71. McMaster noted it was a privilege to select her to complete her brother’s duties. Nordone expressed her dedication to honoring her brother, whom she described as a remarkable leader and an exceptional person.
President Trump endorsed the appointment via his Truth Social account, calling it a meaningful homage to a close political partner. The siblings shared a deep bond after losing both parents during their youth, leading a 22-year-old Graham to adopt and raise his younger sister.
This appointment is purely temporary. A special primary for South Carolina Republicans is scheduled for August 11, which will determine the candidate for the upcoming November election and the subsequent full six-year term starting in January.
