South Africa has officially bowed out of the 2026 World Cup, marking the second African nation to be eliminated from the tournament. The team, known as Bafana Bafana, fell 1-0 to co-hosts Canada during their round-of-32 match this past Sunday.
Led by coach Hugo Broos, the squad maintained a defensive deadlock for the entire regulation period. However, Canada’s Stephen Eustaquio scored the decisive goal during the opening minute of stoppage time, ending South Africa’s historic run. This tournament represented the first instance of South Africa participating in the World Cup knockout rounds after advancing as one of nine African teams from the group stage.
With this result, South Africa joins Tunisia, which was eliminated earlier during the group phase.
