The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) have launched a strategic partnership to modernize digital governance and security within Nigeria’s mining industry. Minister Dr. Dele Alake and NIMC Director-General Dr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote met in Abuja to discuss how integrating robust identity systems can drive sector reforms.
Dr. Alake emphasized that a reliable identity framework is vital for tracking mining activities, curbing illegal operations, and ensuring regulatory compliance. He noted that data-driven governance is essential for promoting investment and maintaining national security. By leveraging accurate statistics and digital verification, the Ministry aims to improve licensing processes and overall sector accountability.
Dr. Coker-Odusote highlighted that the recent NIMC Act provides the necessary legal foundation to foster a comprehensive digital ecosystem. She explained that aligning identity management with mining operations will streamline database coordination, improve monitoring of mining companies, and facilitate the enforcement of Community Development Agreements. Both agencies have committed to utilizing technology to bolster transparency, law enforcement, and sustainable growth across the solid minerals sector.
