The Southern Kaduna Peoples United Associations (SOKAPU) is demanding a formal autopsy to investigate the passing of medical professional Mary Habila. She died while performing her official duties at the private home of Minister of Works Dave Umahi in Uburu, Ebonyi State.
During a television appearance, SOKAPU President Samuel Tabara rejected the notion that Southern Kaduna traditions prohibit autopsies. While Habila’s family cited cultural concerns for refusing the procedure, Tabara emphasized that national law takes precedence over cultural beliefs. He noted that he had personally communicated with the grieving family regarding the issue.
Regarding legal proceedings, Tabara confirmed that a lawyer was assigned to serve the minister, though no update has been provided yet. He also clarified that the proposed N20 billion compensation is intended as damages should the investigation reveal any criminal activity related to her death.
Currently, Habila’s body is being held by the police, leading her family to request that Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu facilitate the release of her remains for burial.
