Seun Kuti credits Fela’s success to his privileged lineage

Seun Kuti discusses how his father Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s upbringing as the son of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti helped shape his legendary career path.

Musician Seun Kuti, son of the late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, recently asserted that his father’s immense success was rooted in his family background. During an interview on Ada’s Room, Kuti explained that being the son of the prominent activist and nationalist Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti provided his father with essential advantages that facilitated his rise in both the music industry and society.

While acknowledging this head start, Kuti emphasized that his father was nonetheless remarkably hardworking and resilient. He highlighted that the family ethos centers on diligent effort rather than relying solely on inherited status. Kuti remarked that while a famous family name can help open doors, it does not alleviate the intense pressure to maintain high standards. He explained that industry professionals rarely show patience for children of legends, as they immediately expect the same level of greatness, leaving no room for a gradual growth period.
