Senator Rufai Sani Hanga has dismissed rumors suggesting he intends to leave the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the All Progressives Congress (APC). Despite recent discussions with high-ranking ruling party officials, including President Tinubu, Hanga confirmed his loyalty to his current party during a Tuesday radio interview in Kano.
While maintaining his membership, Hanga expressed doubt about his party’s national prospects, noting that the NDC lacks the necessary support to overcome the APC in a presidential contest. However, he remains confident that the party will secure a victory in Kano.
Regarding his political interactions with Kwankwaso, Hanga emphasized that mutual respect remains intact. He detailed the nomination process for the NDC gubernatorial ticket, noting that Kwankwaso originally sought his input on naming Mustapha Kwankwaso as the candidate. Hanga noted he offered to serve as campaign manager for the younger Kwankwaso but received no further communication.
Ultimately, Hanga explained that he was approached by Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo regarding a potential deputy role, which he accepted despite considering it a demotion. He expressed confusion after learning that Mustapha Kwankwaso had instead been chosen as the running mate for Gwarzo.
