The Nigerian Senate has officially requested that the Federal Government provide substantial financial backing to the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to expedite the repair of essential roads nationwide. This resolution stems from a recent report highlighting the disastrous state of the Onyagede-Ogobia Road in Benue State, where only two out of 28 kilometers remain usable. Lawmakers have recommended an immediate emergency intervention for the road, alongside a full-scale reconstruction project estimated to cost over N15 billion.
During the session, senators expressed concern that poor infrastructure and erosion have crippled economic activities, education, and healthcare in the region. Senator Adams Oshiomhole argued that the Federal Ministry of Works must prioritize the maintenance of existing highways—specifically corridors like the Benin-Asaba and Auchi-Abuja roads—over the construction of new projects. To ensure these repairs are effective, the Senate called for improved drainage systems and increased security patrols along critical routes.
Separately, the Senate addressed the recent killing of two farmers in Pankshin, Plateau State. Senator Diket Plang brought the issue to the floor, noting that the victims were targeted while defending their crops from cattle. The upper chamber observed a minute of silence for the deceased and urged law enforcement agencies to ensure a thorough prosecution of the perpetrators. Senate President Godswill Akpabio concluded by directing that all relevant reports be forwarded to the executive branch and appropriation committees for immediate action.
