Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, has urged former presidential candidate Peter Obi to stop asserting that he secured a win in the 2023 general election. Onanuga emphasized that Obi should face the reality of his third-place finish instead of persisting in what he termed a state of denial.
This response follows a recent interview on Channels Television where Obi maintained that he was the rightful winner of the poll but was cheated out of the victory. Onanuga characterized the interview as a failure for the former governor of Anambra State, specifically addressing comments regarding political party shifts. While Obi compared his party transitions to those of President Tinubu, Onanuga countered that the President has consistently remained aligned with progressive ideologies since entering politics in the early 1990s.
Onanuga further criticized Obi for continuing to contest the election results years after the Supreme Court dismissed his legal challenges. He acknowledged that while Obi performed well despite a lack of traditional political structures, the ongoing belief in a stolen mandate is merely a delusion fostered by his social media supporters. Onanuga concluded by telling Obi that it is time to move past the election outcome and accept the results as they stand.
