Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu has appointed Deputy Inspector-General Ishyaku Mohammed to oversee security measures for the Osun State gubernatorial election set for August 15, 2026. According to Force spokesperson CSP Aniete Iniedu, this move is intended to maintain a safe and orderly environment throughout the voting process.
DIG Mohammed will lead the police response while collaborating with other agencies through the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security. He will receive assistance from several AIGs and police commissioners assigned to supervise operations in the three senatorial districts. These officers will focus on gathering intelligence and reacting quickly to any security issues.
The police force has pledged to protect everyone involved in the election, including voters, election staff, observers, and the media. IGP Disu issued a stern warning against electoral misconduct, noting that activities like intimidation or ballot snatching will result in arrest. Additionally, the presence of armed security aides or unauthorized personnel at polling centers is strictly prohibited. State-run security groups and private agencies are also barred from election duties. The authorities have encouraged voters to head to the polls without fear, promising a neutral and professional operation.
