Bello Abubakar, the physician involved in the controversy regarding a medical report used for former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s bail plea, has acknowledged writing the document. During an inquiry by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Abubakar provided a statement admitting his authorship while firmly rejecting claims of forgery or falsification.
Abubakar, an oncologist, denied conspiring with anyone to provide fraudulent evidence for judicial use. He also stated that he does not know Mohammed Bala Aliyu, the man accused of using the report to support an affidavit for El-Rufai’s bail request. The doctor asserted that he never authorized Aliyu to file such documents on his behalf.
The ICPC previously alleged that the doctor issued a misleading report to sway legal outcomes at the Kaduna State High Court. The specific document, dated June 10, 2026, was titled “Medical Report and Expert Opinion for Urgent Medical Intervention.” While the ICPC questioned the report’s accuracy, Abubakar maintained he acted professionally and without intent to deceive.
Regarding his connection to the former governor, Abubakar explained that their relationship spans many years. He first met El-Rufai through the former governor’s wife, having delivered her first child. He noted that El-Rufai was a registered patient at the National Hospital in Abuja starting around 2005 and remained under his care periodically over the following years.
