Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, has come to the defense of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria and Cardinal John Onaiyekan. He claims that the current administration is opting to attack critics rather than provide solutions to the nation’s ongoing crises.
In a social media statement released Wednesday, Obi expressed concern over the aggressive reaction directed at the clergy. He noted that the Catholic Church has historically served as a moral compass throughout various military and democratic regimes, offering praise when appropriate and criticism when necessary, rather than acting as a political opposition party.
Obi highlighted that religious groups are uniquely positioned to understand the hardships faced by the average citizen. Because these leaders interact daily with families struggling with inflation, unemployment, and safety concerns, their observations are grounded in the lived experiences of the public.
Drawing from his time as governor, Obi encouraged government officials to view feedback as a constructive tool for governance. He specifically pushed back against attempts to frame the tension as a religious conflict. He emphasized that economic instability and insecurity impact every Nigerian, regardless of their background or belief system.
Ultimately, Obi argued that the bishops were simply echoing the frustrations of a struggling populace. Instead of disparaging figures like Cardinal Onaiyekan, he suggested that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should prioritize explaining its policies and addressing the worsening conditions that continue to diminish hope for many citizens.
