Peter Obi, the 2027 presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has expressed deep concern regarding the looming food insecurity in Northern Nigeria. He asserts that this severe situation is a direct consequence of inadequate governance.
Responding to a United Nations World Food Programme report indicating that 17 million people in the region face acute hunger, Obi argued that the crisis is preventable. He emphasized that the North serves as Nigeria’s agricultural hub, and its current state reflects a failure of leadership.
In a formal statement, Obi urged the federal and state governments to prioritize agricultural support over political rhetoric. He called for direct investments to protect farming corridors and provide resources to small-scale farmers. Furthermore, he encouraged active cooperation with the World Food Programme to secure necessary funding and prevent further loss of life.
Obi highlighted that more than 35 million Nigerians are currently at risk during this difficult period, with over 10,000 individuals in Borno State suffering from catastrophic hunger. He concluded that Nigeria’s vast, fertile land should prevent such conditions, labeling the current situation a national failure that requires leaders who place citizen welfare at the forefront of their agenda.
