The Peoples Democratic Party has formally accused the Independent National Electoral Commission, led by Professor Joash Amupitan, of operating as a branch of the ruling All Progressives Congress. This accusation was shared via the party’s official account on X this past Tuesday.
According to the PDP, the commission’s inconsistent approach to court directives and the ongoing opacity regarding electronic result transmission have convinced voters that the agency no longer prioritizes the public interest. The opposition party further suggested that the electoral body is intentionally acting in the interests of the APC to ensure the party remains in power through the 2027 election cycle.
The PDP expressed concern that trust in the commission has fallen to unprecedented levels, arguing that the agency has failed to function as an impartial and open overseer of the democratic process. They emphasized that for a democracy to endure during challenging economic times, citizens must feel that their participation at the polls can lead to meaningful political change, a belief that relies entirely on the presence of a truly independent referee.
