Professor Pat Utomi, a political economist, recently challenged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure the 2027 polls are transparent and fair. Speaking during an interview in Owerri, Utomi asserted that Nigeria has not experienced a truly credible election since the return to democracy in 1999.
He described the 2023 electoral process as a national failure, highlighting issues such as the failure to upload results to the i-Rev portal and widespread reports of voter intimidation and vote buying. Utomi warned that those who label digital result transmission as impossible or illegal are likely laying the groundwork to manipulate future outcomes.
Despite his criticisms of the current state of governance, Utomi remains hopeful for a potential shift in the country’s trajectory. He emphasized that the quality of individuals in public office must improve to foster a culture that drives national development. While acknowledging the severity of the country’s economic and political challenges, he maintains a belief that a positive turnaround remains possible.
