The Oyo State government has expressed dissatisfaction with the life sentences handed down to three individuals convicted of withholding information regarding the kidnappers of teachers and students in the Oriire Local Government Area. State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, stated that the ruling fails to capture the true weight of the offense.
While the government maintains that the punishment is inadequate compared to the severity of the trauma caused to the victims, it has officially decided against challenging the Federal High Court ruling. Oyelade noted that the state respects the judiciary’s decision despite desiring capital punishment for those who assisted in the crime, noting that he views the accomplices as equally guilty as the primary perpetrators.
The Commissioner lauded the court for the rapid conclusion of the proceedings, suggesting it offers a promising outlook for the nation’s legal efficiency. He further called for an update to national anti-terrorism laws to better combat kidnapping through harsher penalties and improved enforcement. In response to security concerns, Oyelade confirmed that the Amotekun Corps and other security partners have boosted surveillance and intelligence operations around schools. He also reaffirmed the state’s ongoing commitment to supporting victims and their families, dismissing claims that they have been neglected.
