The Osun State Government has officially prohibited all National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) operations within state motor parks. This decision follows a security council summit in Osogbo, led by Governor Ademola Adeleke, where officials assessed the ongoing internal leadership conflict within the union.
Governor Adeleke clarified that while transportation services must remain active for the public, no individual may function under the banner of the NURTW. Security forces, including the police and various intelligence agencies, have been ordered to arrest anyone violating this ban or collecting unauthorized levies. To ensure these rules are followed, a Rapid Response Squad has been formed to maintain order across the parks.
Simultaneously, the Osun State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has established caretaker committees to manage transport union affairs. Following discussions with stakeholders, including traditional rulers and various transport bodies, ALGON appointed Chief Kazeem Oyewale to lead the NURTW committee. Similar committees were formed for the Road Transport Employees Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) and motorcycle-tricycle operators.
ALGON officials, including Chairman Samuel Idowu Abiodun, explained that these measures were necessary to mitigate security risks caused by the union disputes. The caretaker teams are expected to manage transport operations until a permanent resolution is reached. Furthermore, union assets are to be surrendered to these newly appointed committees, with police support requested to ensure a smooth administrative transition across all 30 local government areas.
