The Nigeria Police Force has issued a stern warning to political actors and election staff, cautioning against any interference with the August 15 Osun State governorship election. CP Samuel Erale Etaifo, the officer overseeing security for the exercise, confirmed that individuals caught engaging in electoral misconduct will be transported to Abuja for trial to ensure impartiality.
A security force totaling 15,000 officers, which includes Assistant Inspectors-General and various specialized units, is being deployed to maintain order. Etaifo emphasized that the police are committed to preventing malpractice such as ballot theft, voter intimidation, and bribery. He noted that the Inspector-General of Police ordered this strategic placement to stabilize the region and foster public trust.
During a briefing, Etaifo mentioned his meeting with Governor Ademola Adeleke to affirm the police force’s dedication to a peaceful process. He reiterated that security personnel must remain professional and neutral, providing an environment where every candidate has an equal opportunity to participate. The authorities are urging citizens to assist by reporting suspicious activity and obeying the law to facilitate a credible election.
